Zelensky spoke today at the NATO summit and DC and made clear what had been implicitly known: The fate of his country at war depends on the outcome of the U.S. election this November. The GOP is hostile to Ukraine and sympathetic to Russia for ideological reasons and out of mere spite towards perceived Democratic indulgence of the Ukrainian war effort. NATO plans to announce an “irrevocable” pathway for Ukraine to join the alliance in hope that this will protect Ukraine no matter what Trump may do in office. Yet NATO remains primarily dependent on America as its largest army (second is Turkey) and biggest provider of arms and intelligence support. Until the EU ramps up defense spending and become master of its own security member states — not just Ukraine — will be at the mercy of events in Washington when defending against an increasingly threatening world on its peripheries. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2024/07/08/nato-ukraine-membership-irreversible-washington-summit/74300582007/

I believe this is a weak tactic, as both Biden and Zelensky are portraying themselves as victims to gain sympathy and support. It seems like Biden is trying to win over public opinion, while Zelensky wants to appear as a tenacious fighter.
