I always just mindlessly add 15-20%. So the whole "tipping incentivizes quality of service" argument has always seemed unrealistic to me.

Depends if it's a one shot or iterated game. Seems tipping has evolved from an iterated game to a broad social norm.

it's a social norm + tipping is now priced into wages so there's socially enforced guilt if you don't tip

yes exactly lol

when the market is up I tip a small amount always as a baseline

and when the market is down I only tip for above average service / special occasions

not everyone as rich as vitalik / us people in general

if I had enough money to sustain myself for the next 10 years I could even give a 30% tip and not care about it, no need to figure out a particular tip in that case
