Do people actually consciously make a judgement about quality of service when they tip??! I always just mindlessly add 15-20%. So the whole "tipping incentivizes quality of service" argument has always seemed unrealistic to me. https://x.com/tracewoodgrains/status/1826601506885320775

Depends if it's a one shot or iterated game. Seems tipping has evolved from an iterated game to a broad social norm.

This β when I was in hospitality, Iβd have regular customers whoβd tip more based on the service/relationship. So yes, it can definitely make a big difference. And if you get poor service thatβs where it should be reflected. (I tip minimum 20% unless awful service and tip more for above & beyond service)

it's a social norm + tipping is now priced into wages so there's socially enforced guilt if you don't tip
