I don’t want to engage in divisive political commentary (at least on here) but I’m genuinely shocked at what happened in Syria. They just snapped their fingers and a regime that existed for five decades evaporated into thin air. Anything is possible!

HTS was formed in January 2017, and has been ramping up its efforts to overtake the Assad regime pretty much ever since by creating a formal military structure, creating a pipeline for training soldiers, procuring equipment, etc. If anything, Assad’s ousting happened *despite* both the Trump (who took office at the same time) and Biden administrations, considering that HTS are a coalition of islamists and not exactly friends of the US
