FARCASTER LOGIN What is Farcaster good for? It’s good for devs. It’s good for data analysts. And it’s good for social login. The last is the thing I’m most interested in. When you start a new site you can use Google or Apple login. And that’s fine. But it just gives you an email. And maybe Google Drive access in Google’s case. You can also use X/Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn. But those APIs change so quickly and adversarially that you can’t really build features on your site that rely on them. So you end up using them similarly to Google login, where you get a username only. Now arrives Farcaster. The first fairly large scale decentralized crypto social protocol. Where people aren’t in it solely for the money. Now, for all users who log in with Farcaster, suddenly you can provide encrypted messaging between accounts and pull their full social context. And if they’ve connected a wallet and ENS, they have a balance and can spend and receive money in your app. This changes everything.

🎯 and to top it off, farcaster users are highly curious and crypto native, having sign in with fc shows signal to this cohort - builders have a ton of incentive and users also have incentive to grow their network here over anywhere else bc of that portability and ownership aspect

💯 it’s been such a joy to be here and go from believing this on a theoretical level to start seeing it in action as more apps get built out. When I log in to /events or /bracket and my social graph is there, it’s such an a-ha moment. Easy to imagine a world where that becomes the norm.

Yes the vision is extremely compelling but worth calling out right now that: - Sign in with Farcaster (SIWF) is still OAuth but with Warpcast servers - Direct casts are not E2E encrypted and apps cannot leverage DCs in protocol until 2025 Not saying these wont be solved, but we're far from the holy grail

Login with Farcaster comes up with the user open data graph. It can be used to do a seamless user onboarding, instead of giving a vanilla experience to all the users. This is what I'm here for!!

Having a login that is also a wallet could be a great opportunity for social apps to make money outside of advertisement. First of all, your money is a click away from in app payments but also potential for yield from holding usdc and fees for peer to peer payments or money services.

Warpcast Pay is great too as it makes payments to anyone with an account so much easier. Bigger contact list than paypal, no need to ask for email or user name as you can easily look it up. In fact, I believe it deserves a simple standalone app. At least, it would be great if EVM wallets like Rainbow & Base Wallet let you search for Farcaster names & send funds directly. cc: @mikedemarais.eth @jessepollak

Deconstructing the kool-aid: 1/ Farcaster isn't relevant yet. And it won't be until the basic, "boring" features are added to Warpcast. Which they won't because the team has other plans. 2/ Farcaster isn't decentralized. Idk where you're coming from, but I don't see centralized things doing great in the long run. Sure, it's possible - humans have proved many times they're happy to play their worst available card - business and personal too. 3/ Any crypto "login with" solution provides the same benefits. FC didn't invent anything out of the ordinary here. Yes, the added social on top can be helpful - but can also be misleading: it's so easy to create personalities on the Internet, and it will get even easier with AI.
