I proposed the name Gray Tribe as it came from Scott Alexander. But perhaps a better name is Tech Tribe, as it’s more legible.

Great comments and reactions. Red and Blue are after all kind of arbitrary, and indeed recently flipped (Red was once the color of communism). Perhaps Gray it is…

It was remarkable to me how naturally people picked up “gray” as the meme after your epic MoZ #40 For me a big part was the images you gave of “gray shirts” with diff tech logos and a “gray pride parade” Perhaps it all gave a more visceral sense that we really *could* compete w red hats and blue banners?

As I look at all this — and trusting your insane prescience w memes and turns of phrase — maybe the way it fits is Conservatives : Red Liberals : Blue Tech Tribe : Gray ??

Ive been amazed at how effective “gray” is w non-techy moderates, eg: “You know this red-blue thing is insane. The gray party is people on the cutting edge of tech who reject red-blue to focus on massive human progress.” Can you imagine how powerful it would be if Tech Tribe can win the moderate center?!

Tech tribe provokes reflexive immune response though. Loses the cultural stealth Tech also has negative social capital Doesn’t need to be more inspiring or legible Gray pride. Nuff said

I think gray is great as a contrast to red and blue. It could have another name also but it should continue to be represented by the color gray.

I’ve gone with 𝙿𝚄𝙽𝙺 myself Tech isn’t the great unifier, many divisions amongst the tech minded happen/will continue to happen The glue is unlimited curiosity and the daring to question the status quo or the current running norms of whatever culture you may find yourself in

Technology will certainly look different a decade from now and inspire other tribes with even more nuanced ideologies, so calling it “tech tribe” now wouldn’t be very future-proof.
