I never understood the social dynamics of asking a young woman to formal dance like prom or homecoming. I must have asked ten different people before someone said yes. “I’m waiting for Steve to ask me.” “Kimberly didn’t tell me you were going to ask me.” Retrospectively it seems they were trying to decline my invitation politely and kindly. I yearned for a more obvious road map to navigate the terrain of teenage desire. It was /is fraught and complicated. Perhaps @caro.eth someone desperately wanted to ask you to prom but couldn’t work up the courage. Maybe they got lost in the morass of, “Elizabeth said that Maureen told Jennifer, Bobby wants to ask me so I am waiting for him.”

Emotional development is in full experimentation during those years; it stirs up embarrassment, shame, joy, laughter, and connection all at once. Asking is one of the bravest acts, and your photo looks incredibly cinematic (: In my case, I chose a job before prom. I was ready to get out into the world.
