I’m native French and for the life of me I cannot articulate any rule in relation to why some nouns are masculine and others feminine. It looks completely arbitrary and I’ve just unquestioningly learned the gender of every word alongside the vocabulary itself. There are even words where to this day I’m not sure I get it right (like “icône” which I use in the feminine)

not french but I learned at least one gender rule - that I'm sure there must be some exceptions of. everything ending in "ion" ..like say ..'revolution' ..is feminine

I think the rule you referred to applies only to words ending in /s/ion, like passion, télévision, révolution. If there’s no s-sounding consonant before -ion, the rule doesn’t work (at least not consistently)

Thanks, that must be it, kind of shortcut deducted just the "ion" part where it should be /s/ion
