All these possible reasons assume a lot of moral enlightenment among alien species, though. What if ethics were an idiosyncracy of mid-curve beings like ourselves, but otherwise absent among vastly inferior animals and vastly superior aliens? I like to think of those superior aliens as amoral (not necessarily immoral) beings who think just about as much of us as we think of ants, which is not much at all. Similar to the Engineers in the Alien series or the Eldritch creatures of HP Lovecraft. They wouldn’t think twice at wiping us out if they needed to build an intergalactic highway where Earth stands. It’s just that we haven’t been enough of a nuisance so far that they had to whip out the bug spray

Do you think ethics are an idiosyncrasy of mid-curve beings, or could they be an inevitable innovation on the path toward large-scale cooperation? Yeah, I've made a similar joke about how if we were eradicated by aliens they wouldn't send their most fearsome ships, they'd call pest-control Joe with a drinking problem

I imagine ethics would be needed tor intra-species cooperation to some degree (perhaps anthropomorphizing here — there isn’t that much of it in nature, actually, outside of humans and a few gregarious species that build colonies, like ants and termites). But I’m much more skeptical of inter-species cooperation, which is even rarer among our limited Earthly sample, except in the form of co-evolutionary symbiosis

wdym? we're surrounded by inter-species cooperation. Grains & legumes, fruiting plants, domesticated animals, microbiota. For all of these we create environments for them to flourish and reproduce and we get some of the benefits, too. Microbiomes are maybe the best example. I don't think the species boundary is actually that big of a deal.
