All these possible reasons assume a lot of moral enlightenment among alien species, though. What if ethics were an idiosyncracy of mid-curve beings like ourselves, but otherwise absent among vastly inferior animals and vastly superior aliens?

I like to think of those superior aliens as amoral (not necessarily immoral) beings who think just about as much of us as we think of ants, which is not much at all. Similar to the Engineers in the Alien series or the Eldritch creatures of HP Lovecraft. They wouldn’t think twice at wiping us out if they needed to build an intergalactic highway where Earth stands.

It’s just that we haven’t been enough of a nuisance so far that they had to whip out the bug spray
