I’ve been quieter than usual lately, as I was über-busy conducting airport inspections over multiple days. 13K steps per day instead of sitting in front of a laptop broke not only my casting habits, but my fitness ones, too. I’m sharing this as an excuse to say that I love airports. No, not the pitiful excuses like those found in the US or Europe. I’m talking about Asian airports, in all their chaotic neutral glory. Airports are the epitome of liminal spaces (as this picture taken today illustrates perfectly). A place between places. A rendezvous spot to connect and also part ways. A bridge between cultures, codes, and norms; only with underpriced retail, overpriced food, and an endless spectacle outside the windows for aviation geeks. Truly, what’s better than an airport?

This is how I feel about “downstairs” vs “upstairs” in big formal houses. The rooms that “do work” (kitchens, garages, workshops). When I move through an airport and everything “just works” (when I end up in the right place, almost like I have some divine wind at my back guiding me” I am agog at the thousands of tiny design decisions that all add up to “Good” (capital G, shit worked….”Quality” manifest) I love your attention and appreciation of this Thomas in your professional window onto these amazing human coordination structures. Beauty in the seemingly banal.

I love the downstairs/upstairs dichotomy, hadn’t thought about that before
