Fascinating explainer, thank you. Whenever people say “what’s the big deal with slightly warmer air”, I feel the urge to remind them that temperature is just a measure of the kinetic energy of the molecules in the atmosphere. The warmer it is, the greater its energy, and thus the more frequent and intense the weather episodes. Add in a greater capacity for a warm atmosphere to store water molecules, and we get these results

just think of those who say "the sea was warmer this year. perfect temperature". the warmer sea is a bomb set to explode is not a good thing!

Funny (not funny) enough, I had this exact convo last month with relatives living by the Mediterranean. They were telling me that the sea was uncharacteristically warm (by a large measure) and feared that the first cold front to arrive from the North would clash with it and cause massive floods. Their area had experienced such devastating storms four years ago and is still recovering. Turns out this exact scenario happened, but much further east (over Poland / Romania / Austria). So generally people who’ve lived by the sea long enough know better

Yeah it happened north of Italy because of the alps. They stopped the cold jet streams and pushed them up. You can easily see it in the videos of the thread.
