I am very bullish on the AR glasses form factor and the possibilities it unlocks, especially in combination with novel input devices like the wristband that detects small hand gestures. I am, however, very bearish on Orion being a Meta innovation. Zuck's privacy track record is abysmal and his recent PR-crafted shapeshifting into an innocuous tech bro should not fool anyone. Orion has incredible tech (for a v1.0) but also the potential to be first and foremost an ad-serving and data-harvesting panopticon device. You might optimistically argue "wait and see", but we've seen that movie before several times with Meta. I wish this product had come instead from early-days Oculus or even Apple.

I get your concerns about privacy with Meta. Which companies do you think would handle AR tech better?

i've always assumed that AR would be a data-harvesting ad-serving tech mostly. cynical, maybe on my end? and then imagined a dystopian IRL future where all the screens are white, but since we wear AR lenses (contact or glasses) all day, a unique individual experience is fed to us as we walk through it. 😬

I love new tech toys although I’m absolutely not able to use it fully properly. Maybe my opinion is unpopular but when we talk about accessories like glasses, watches and phones the aesthetic should be the absolute priority. I know I must sounds stupid and spoiled but the day someone (probably Apple) will develop a pleasant new product I’m gonna buy blindfolded.

They seemed to be hell bent to carve out the ar glasses category since their failed foray with Oculus way back , so I guess technologically they are likely industry leading or at least in the front pack. You nailed main concern with meta generally which is the blatant disregard for consumer privacy and data where they are treated more like the product to be maximised for profit rather than a security feature to be protected .
