What is your take on TikTok? Chinese spyware or it’s okay? I think the only way to allow a foreign app is to allow end to end encryption for all internet users but the US loves to have backdoors for themselves so of course China would use it. https://apple.news/Aa1NBt28MQ1Gep3LOKNhJpA

The addiction claim is not false, but also... All social media is that way? Maybe because it's video-based and its algo is objectively more powerful than others, they're even more addictive but that's kind of their success a little too. If TikTok is sued, Insta should be sued too.

I think being spied has no effect on the average person. What its algo does to people's brains though, that's where the real harm is

Xenophobia is lame. TikTok is just better at being a creepy time suck and our government is jealous about that.

Tiktok is a great app that has democratized film making but with a less toxic algorithm compared to instagram or xwitter. I think the proposed bans and lawsuits are more about anti-competitive sinophobia and imperial hegemony than any objective fears.

I definitely think it's a net negative for society. I'm also pretty confident it's spyware, but whether it's any worse than the US gov spying on its own citizens, I can't really say.

Spyware or not, the harm it causes is equal, if not greater, than any other conventional social media platform. https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2023/11/tiktok-risks-pushing-children-towards-harmful-content/

It’s Chinese spyware and also manipulative. In the us the spyware and psyops are split more between the government and corporations
