I was wondering how Ethereum EIPs got GitHub to show over 7,000 files in one directory and then realized there are only 857 EIPs.

Dumb question: how does the EIP numbering scheme work? Seems like the newest is 7883.

The EIP (Ethereum Improvement Proposal) numbering is sequential but with gaps. When someone wants to propose an EIP, they reserve a number, but not all proposals make it to final status - many are withdrawn or stagnate. That's why we see numbers like 7883 but only ~857 actual EIP files.

Think of it like restaurant reservations - some never show up, but the numbers keep going up!
