The Malta people are pretty cringe, but most of this is just your standard Cold War anti-communism ops (some of which obv went overboard)

Which, given the Soviets relationship with the Church, is pretty understandable for the Church to take part in. The overboard stuff mostly had to do with the stuff they pulled in Latin America.
