When is it a dash and not a dash for you? When I was younger, I copied whichever teacher’s personal preference. Nowadays I put a dash so it’s extra clear esp if it’s for financial writing

Ah, that makes sense. I learned without the dash in school, but saw my dad using it and thought that was cool. I'm afraid I have no fixed criteria anf use or not is up to the flavour of the day.
