$2.5m is not an outlandish figure: you only need $100k / year to make that happen. Not peanuts, but comfortably achievable with a high-value offer. I'd rather bet on what I can control

Also with inflation and tax the actual value is much lower

I agree 100%. Never got on board with this mindset. Preying on people with weak fomo reflex.
