My daughter chose INVESTING WITH ART as subject for her Bachelor Degree Thesis. Now, yesterday at the presentation of the subjects, her exams coordinator told to the class that this subject is not really suited for ART LOVERS because they’ll need to work with an Auction House and they will discover the dark side of art. In his opinion this could jeopardize their vision on a so called loved subject. 1. I don’t think he needed to share his opinion at this stage 2. His opinion is wrong 😑 Thoughts?

I'll be blunt, as usual I don't know this exam coordinator guy (and from the sounds of it, I don't care to know him) but I'm reasonably sure he was an artist who couldn't swing it. You know, "if you can't do teach" Art does have a dark side, but what I'm assuming what he's referring to is the dark side of the art market, not "art" in genera. Funnily I added these two books to my reading list recently (they're both about the art market in different ways, you might be interested too): — Get the Picture by Bianca Bosker — All That Glitters by Orlando Whitfield But the TLDR is that the dark side of anything is opt-in, especially in this day and age. Before the internet you could be forgiven for saying otherwise. But gatekeeping is yesterday's news. Today you can make your own name, sell on your own terms or even on your own platform. This is obviously especially valid in web3 She'll be OK, he won't But who cares about him lol

There's another very good book tangentially related to this: Perennial Seller by Ryan Holiday. Highly, highly advise you and her both to read it

First of all thank you for the book advice. I took note and I’ll share with my daughter. Second, you made me laugh hard when you said “if you can’t do, teach”. It’s sadly true. I know him because he is a photographer but fortunately we never had the chance to engage. As you said the “art market” has the dark side and im totally agree with you, nowadays “gatekeeping” is an old news. Art instead is still what it is and you can create your own gallery and market and audience if you don’t want to deal with third parties. I know she’ll be fine, don’t know about him but who cares indeed 😅
