Whether you want to admit it or not, the crypto industry has mostly been a vehicle for dishonorable behavior

Your options after internalizing this are:
- capitulate to dishonorable behavior
- leave the industry 
- keep the faith that one day this will change 
- cognitive dissonance

I vacillate between #3 and #4

Is it cognitive dissonance to believe that it's always a race between positive and negative use cases, and best we can do is scale the positive use cases as effectively as possible?

No, I'd consider that keeping the faith -- it's only cognitive dissonance if you aren't realistic about the status of the race (ie. which side is winning)

I think the excess / greed / small-mindedness outweighs the amount of real world good done thus far

It's the sentiment @vitalik.eth tried to convey with "have we earned it?"

Lol honestly not sure which side is winning per se, it's kind of a timing/musical chairs game, we have to have the right parts in play in the right moment and not too early or risk being undercut (eg privacy tech, remove "training wheels" before it matters but not skip them so that we don't ever get there, etc).
