Just came across “Legends of the Galactic Heroes” after trying to find the top-rated TV series on IMDb. Can’t believe I haven’t heard of it until now! It feels like an alternate-universe anime adaptation of Asimov’s Foundation. Excited to start watching! https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0096633/

Had an anime aversion just like you! But then Prime Video nudged me along with Cowboy Bebop. I think the less weird ones might be good to start with, like Cowboy Bebop or Attack on Titan.
