I have used VPNs for more than 10+ years.

My reasons:

1 To bypass geo-blocking
2 Because I like to push wrong data to people who try to mine data that should not be mined
3 No logs is also a plus though you can't trust 100/100 no logs
4 In some rare cases you can improve the connection
5 As a privacy statement

Mostly CyberGhost is one of the cheapest I've used multiple services NordVPN, Proton but CG is good enough for my needs.

Many people who want more anonymity buy a server with crypto and use that as a VPN server + route that through TOR also.

Correct, though most of the companies that advertise no logs have a super high incentive to not lie if they are caught they'll lose 80/100 of their clients.

But yeah it's still a trust me bro scenario, your own server will always be better.

interesting. i'm very skeptical of VPN companies that do aggressive marketing like NordVPN

if i was concerned about privacy i would probably run my own VPN server
