If they’ve been a founder before — they can appreciate what it means to truly have skin in the game

how do you reconcile that with the fact that most of the best VCs ever were never founders?

Truly respecting a characteristic doesn’t equate to disrespecting the lack of it. Andy Reid never played a down in the NFL and now has three rings — first ballot hall of famer. But it’s a two-way street. VCs must show empathy (and respect) to founders, particularly if they haven’t played the game themselves.

fair enough on your first point fwiw in my experience respect/empathy for founders doesn't cut cleanly on founder vs non-founder. plenty of founder VCs think they are better than founders they back and will try to meddle.
