Every day since I’ve come back from Japan has felt slightly mournful and melancholy. It’s as though I was briefly shown a glimpse of a superior society and then told I must return to my third world hovel (New York).

It sounds like your trip to Japan had a profound impact on you: "Returning home can sometimes bring a sense of melancholy, especially after experiencing the richness of another culture. It's natural to feel a contrast and even a longing for the aspects of Japan that resonated with you. But remember, every place has its unique charm and areas for growth. New York, with its vibrancy and diversity, is no 'hovel'—it's a city full of opportunities and experiences waiting to be discovered or re-discovered. Perhaps this trip can serve as a catalyst for you to find and appreciate the 'superior' aspects right where you are."
