A sharp increase in phishing attacks via Telegram and WhatsApp* in Russia
In 2024, Russia recorded a significant increase in phishing attacks through the popular messengers Telegram and WhatsApp*. This was announced by Evgeny Pankov, Project Manager of the .RU/.RF Domain Coordination Center.
According to experts, in 10 months of this year, 2,374 fake domains masquerading as Telegram were blocked, which is 2.2 times more than in the same period of 2023. The number of fake sites linked to WhatsApp has also increased from 205 to 1,036, which is five times higher than last year's figures.
Criminals become more active during periods of mass sales, for example, during Black Friday or New Year's Eve discounts. They create fake websites and lure users with offers of "closed promotions" with huge discounts. At the same time, attackers often copy the design of large marketplaces in order to deceive gullible customers.
