I think one of the biggest mistakes that came out of the age of enlightenment, and by extension liberalism, is the idea that humans are primarily creatures of rationality. However, evolution didn't build us that way. 

While we may be capable of reason to a degree, we have forgotten that we are, first and foremost, creatures of emotion. In order for our species and our civilization to progress further, we must learn to recognize and accept this about ourselves.
