however, i've come to like doing it on my own terms - ~$5-10 depending on type of service i'm receiving (restaurant, taxi)

yea, absolutely ridiculous in these cases 😭

i remember going to a "local" cafe in DC a couple years ago, ordered coffees + pastries and tip machine default asked for 18% so i paid it because "support local businesses"

finished and was leaving when one of the servers asked me if i could clear the table we used...

It’s off the charts in Canada, 18% is the norm and growing… even for self service and take out.
