In principle, their goal is to make a system where you don't have to trust the devs. And I do think that they've gone further in that regard than many people give them credit for.

That’s a crazy story. Apple also scans your eyeballs but people trust Apple to do it. They’ve spent years earning that trust. In addition to that they’ll have to demonstrate that they’re not building a supranational biometric surveillance layer whether by accident or design.
