pretty expensive, depending on the type of rocket, but even previous generations of space programs were contracted out to various companies. but you're correct that it's a mostly modern phenomenon to have single companies build entire vehicles https://space.stackexchange.com/questions/33762/who-were-the-major-manufacturers-of-the-apollo-11-rocket
