It has a steep learning curve but it's a great game. The main hurdle is learning all the different types of tech. Once you learn the various categories, then suddenly there aren't ~40 options there are ~5 options and it's less overwhelming. It's probably still my fav board game overall.

What is the average game length? Do you recommend purchasing the most recent version?

I'd say about 45 minutes per person, maybe 1:15 per person on your first game or two. Great question. The original Eclipse has more expansions for it which can be cool but a lot of it is out of print and expensive. Newest version of it made a lot of really small balancing changes that tend to make a lot of sense. Also the organizer that comes with it is pretty great (at least better than the thousand bags the first one came with). I can still sit down with the original version of the game, have zero expansions, and have a wonderful time playing the game. Or I can play the tricked out newest version and still learn some things.

In your opinion, what is the sweet spot with the number of players?

Entire spectrum of players is great. It does tend to be our groups "oh, we have five players tonight? We could do an eclipse" because so many games max out at four players. But in the last 7 days I've played a 2 player game, a 3 player game and a 5 player game and enjoyed them all.

Oh, nice. I like games that have some flex on player count. Much like you, the number of people that attend each week varies (as few as 4, as many as 12), so when we decide what hits the table, we look for the games that match player counts.
