Iām watching a very skilled priest perform the Hocho-shiki also known as the āKnife Ceremonyā. Itās a traditional Japanese ritual where a highly skilled chefāoften a priest or someone with ceremonial trainingāfillets a fish without touching it with their hands, using only a knife and chopsticks to maintain the rituals purity. The act is a sacred offering to the kami (Shinto deities), expressing gratitude and reverence for nature and life. It honors the life of the fish and reflects the Shinto belief in the sacredness of natural elements. The ritual dates back over 1,000 years, linked to courtly etiquette during the Heian period. Heās wearing full Heian gear, it took him 25 minutes, and I do not think I could do this at all. I need to feel a fish with my hands to feel the bones. This skill this takes is crazy.
