theoretically, through Method acting one could present any emotion and truly be the most sincere about it if someone is struggling, would it be viable if they acted as an oligarch (to the full artistic extent) to honestly experience the joy and relief that an oligarch would experience?

this is possible, and actually the most powerful way to achieve anything by first demonstrating affinity of form. however, as with method acting you can’t fake it. Christian Bale didn’t just emulate Dick Cheney, he gained 50 lbs. Anne Hathaway went vegan to play Rebekah Neuman. Heath Ledger tweaked himself out for the Joker. Daniel Day Lewis never breaks his accent on a set. There is nothing moderate or casual about method acting, it is one of the hardest things you could ever do, albeit very effective. so yes, if someone wants to embody an oligarch down to directing every thought that creates feeling then an action, they would definitely be able to transform.

thanks for this write up! i recently watched this panel (paywalled😢) and Ethan Hawke specifically talks about how in his understanding of Method acting it doesn’t necessarily require social immersion, but internally cultivating an environment in which you truly experience the emotions you mean to externally portray. i imagine social immersion can only help, but i wonder how the cultivation of empathy can make up for the lack of resources. in this light it suddenly occurs to me that it might have some faint intersection with manifestation, energy attraction, and certain forms of prayers. I don’t think the intersection is faint, imo it’s all part of the same! I believe that internally cultivating the environment is the game — the social immersion can help but it’s almost the forceful element not the art of it, and alone insufficient. I think it takes even more skill and is harder to achieve it via craft / consciousness which is why you see method so often associated with immersion, i.e. it’s imaginatively easier. you can see a breed of actor like meryl streep, excel without doing the immersion steps. but i think the fact that so many incredible actors go full method to get there is a testament to how hard it is to get there.

tldr going method via imagination is a “meryl streep” step harder, and bringing it back to your original point also why it is so hard for the poor man to turn himself into the wealthy oligarch. But, completely do-able with enough desire and willingness to go through pain. people are addicted to their thoughts.
