OK, the mainstream Lens client hey.xyz launched a Pro version for $5 /month, and now I can... yeah, change the icon to purple and tweak the font on my profile page. Seems like Lens client devs are also facing a survival crisis, trying to profit from a small user base.

Yes, especially with how convenient crypto payments are. No doubt, if the Power Badge costs $5/month, plenty of people would pay for it too, even if it’s just for an icon.

Personally, I don't think spam is much of an issue on Lens now, if anything, there seems to be too little content. 

The Hey team hasn’t shared their reasoning for launching the Pro version. Hey’s features are quite solid, and there haven't been many big changes lately, so perhaps they're just exploring something new.

probably a spam deterrent tbh would be curious if the hey team provided any other explanation for why?

This is definitely not a bad sign. In fact, a thriving ecosystem needs paid apps like this to emerge. It’s just that our user base is also quite small, but devs still need to make a living, so any attempts to build a paid model are a good move.
