What am I missing in the article? It’s mentioning a partnership with Мобильные ТелеСистемы — I’d assume they have a relationship with the government (who doesn’t in Russia, you’re kind of forced to), but what about the deal means what you say it means?

mts is virtually owned by russian government and now tg gives the government mapping between phone numbers and tg accounts then you can match phone number to other data from other sources and boom you have a mapping between tg account and your home address

To be fair it’s possible to connect your Telegram account exclusively to an on-chain number on TON network. Not cheap but should put a patch to this “problem”. It seems to me though that the weak link here are phone numbers… tbh can’t believe this does not happen with Meta’s Whatsapp…

I also have no proof of this, but it seems to me that phone numbers are more easily exploitable to gather info about an individual in the US than the rest of the world e.g. advertising phone calls are way more frequent than in Europe Not that this makes the whole thing ok, just a consideration
