Not gonna lie, sometimes I often wonder if the venture game is actually just 'spray and pray'. I remember reading stats about how many venture firms underperformed Nasdaq 100 in the past 10yrs - it shocked me. I will find the exact % and post later w/ source.

Techstars has a similar profile. They’re now geared to help hundreds of companies each year go through accelerators. The vintage year of the season seems to have some of the highest correlations to longer term outcomes (basically a spray and pray strategy that is highly dependent on deal pricing)

Oh and I’ve seen data that only the top decile of venture firms actually produce “venture returns”. The rest underperform the indexes…

I made an effort to hand pick YC deals for 10 yrs and it has worked pretty well. there were some big funds who tried the 'back everything YC does' and that didn't work out because valuations already out of whack when they could get in

One man's "spray and pray" is another man's "power law". YC early cohorts performed excellently. The recent mega-cohorts, too early to tell, but I wouldn't bet against.

i mean, if you're like YCom and the likes where you go pre-seed and even pre-product, definitely it's a spray and pray model. If it works, it works right!
