What's the best strategy to record, remember and then ultimately add to your regular vocabulary new words/phrases/idioms you come across in books? Is maintaining a diary a good idea?

I'm oldschool. I write all of them in a digital notebook including example sentences, a little on word history, and then I make vocab cards I go through every few days. It works tho. And then occasionally, I use those words which helps.
