Question for ethereum experts: Is mainnet a safer store of value than L2s? Or is safety on both primarily a factor of my ability to safeguard my seed phrase? In other words, if I transact primarily on L2s, is there a reason why I might still prefer to store most of my eth on mainnet?

At a very high level. Storing your eth on an l2 is very similar to parking your eth in a smart contract on the l1. There is lindy and audits and whatever to assure you that your funds are safe. But a smart contract (l2) will always be slightly riskier than having eth just sit in your wallet.
