"Myths are not lies. Nor are they detached stories. They are imaginative patterns, networks of powerful symbols that suggest particular ways of interpreting the world. They shape its meaning." -Mary Midgley

studying context is a lot of fun. you learn that the "content" of the events that happen on the planet are largely the function of all the elements that make it possible to begin with. it's environment. it's containers. the forces that all come together to make it possible. the "shaman" type fills this role -- they immerse themselves in context, seen or unseen, to channel insight that can be wielded by those who seek it. these days, this role is filled by the "system-thinker", a person who wants to follow threads and see how they connect to other threads, someone easily excited by complexity and non-linearity, and uses leverage to create change in the world. they are humbled by the sheer profundity of the system they are embedded within and they understand that enduring change isn't top-down, it's a product of riding the waves of conflicting forces and gently guiding themselves as the world swifts them away.
