What is art? This is a question I’ve been thinking about a lot recently. Why is important, and why do we care? I’m not a pessimist, like Rousseau: he talks about societies that develop the arts and sciences leads to corruption and moral degradation; when we can really just survive on the bare necessities, right?

Why do we feel the urge to express? To find ways to communicate ideas? Why don’t we run out of things to say And what about ways to say them? Who said that art has to be a certain way? Why do you care so much? Why not just not care?

language, like math, is unbounded. all art (music, visual, verbal, written, performance) is some combination of math and language. art often describes or assigns abstract concepts like feelings, or how something literal made the artist feel. art is a mathematical or linguistic (definite) expression of abstract thought.

art, as a combination of language and math, is a form of communication. maybe there isn’t an answer to why we want to be understood. why do we laugh, cry, or dream? the feelings in our minds rise to the surface regardless, and how that is expressed differs person to person.
