Constantly quantifying social experiences is more disheartening than inspiring. Average number of likes on Twitter is 0. Imagine having a conversation in real life that is being graded. Creating social algorithms is challenging; that's why it takes decades to learn how to have a conversation with another human.

I think Reddit and TikTok have done some incredible work in breaking through cold start issues for new users. A combination of allowing user choice through views like “most recent” or “newly posted” to heavily pushing a users first post to help them find their audience.

In both cases there’s rules that allow people to break the traditional algorithmic feed experience in order to incentivize engagement with people who otherwise would get very little. The choice allows people to welcome new members of the social graph.
