Been trying lots of minigames lately - I'm begging you, make me pay $1 for something - anything. You capture a lot of attention and you don't create value out of it. That's the whole point. Don't fall into the Clubhouse / Bereal trap!

Counter is that most people who don’t have magic internet money aren’t down to pay $1 for mini games and apps (or even full-sized ones) so it’s better to pursue the traditional grow → monetize (likely via ads) route

I think I agree with you for the longer term but for now I'm not sure advertisers would be interested in small number of users and mini games have very short lifetimes so they won't be there anymore when the volumes are high enough. Pretty sure you can develop a game in 2 days and get 2/3k people to use it. If half of them pay $1 (current users have magic internet money) then that's time well invested.
