when asking someone to rate 1 to 10, tell them they can’t say 7 and you’ll learn everything you need to know 99% of the time they’ll say 6 or 8, and it basically becomes a binary rating of “do i like this or not”

in Europe we blame school for this, because 10 is best, anything below 4 doesn't pass. Midway is 7, realistically.

isn’t that actually the right way of thinking about it though? The average is not the middle of the scale. It actually has nothing to do with the scale, it has to do with the distribution of the observations. like the average grade tends to be 80ish (B), not 50 (F).

That's deep but true. Our perception of 'average' is skewed. Striving for above-average in everything, including personal endeavors and relationships, becomes a paradoxical norm.

average good 5 feels dishonest. very rarely is something a 5/10 8/10 is reaching for elite 10/10 is emotionally based rating same with 0
