Chasing users fleeing another platform is not a long-term valuable strategy.

Effort is better spent trying to figure out the compelling reason for people to join the network independently.

If you have that, then you can use sudden external entropy to help grow.

But sign ups for the sake of sign ups don’t matter.

That is super powerful (and needed and differentiated) and I’d posit it’s why most existing users have stuck around

For me it's the promise of building my portable social graph. Still need more actual usage but I haven't seen a better shot at it yet.

The belief that decentralized power removes power from the reality that we all hate. From finance  to personal hygiene I prefer the government to fuck off.
They can have a taste and build roads but I do not need a smart tooth brush that knows where I am and taxes me accordingly.
