Thought this was interesting, there's a research paper "Pettiness in Social Exchange" that found 81% of participants preferred to be friends with the person who paid back their friends in round numbers vs exact numbers because it felt less transactional

Ran into this immediately when I moved to Japan for college. French classmate was aghast I paid him back for the bus ride he comped me for day 1. Japanese people, on the other hand, seem to love the clarity of transactional gift giving and returning
