- Memories of Silk and Straw by Junichi Saga - Short first-hand documented stories of pre-modern Japan. Surreal reading how recent they were but how different things were. - Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa (or Taiko if you've read Musashi) - Romanticized Japanese historical fiction. Pair with Musashi's real work. - Hikaru no Go (manga) and/or Lessons in the Fundamentals of Go by Toshiro Kageyama - a beautiful game. you can't help but be curious after reading the manga, and the book is my favorite post-beginner texts. - The Unfettered Mind by Takuan Soho - post-Musashi, philosophical non-fiction letters from a Zen priest to a military leader - Hiroshima Diary by Michihiko Hachiya - first-hand account of post-Hiroshima bombing from the perspective of a doctor
