Personally, I've wasted too much time being bummed out I wasn't a "chosen one" (I was a bit bummed out my Hogwarts letter never arrived when I turned 11 and spider bites never gave me spider powers).

I like many particular Chosen One stories—I’m showing my 5yo ATLA right now and valorizing its many virtues—but it’s a bad container and there’s virtually *nothing else*. It’s a strong, lazy default.

The container itself chips away at your ability to live life and understand the world. There are no Chosen Ones. There are manifold quests, choices, and protagonists, but none of them are anointed. The world does not provide order, it affords and awaits it.

it certainly is :) I'd like to tell that to my 12 and 13yo self :)

I’m not sure that the morals of chosen-one stories are not so important that it’s worth being bummed about it … even that is part of self-discovery process
