underestimate culture and vibes at your absolute peril. blockchains very much are brands. back in the 60s Robert Irwin was frustrated that all the good artists would move from California to New York and a famous dealer told him that no matter your stature, a painting that would sell in 1 day in NY might take weeks or months to sell in LA. if you disagree and think blockchains are just invisible tech try launching yr consumer crypto product on IOTA or Stellar and see how far you get. https://x.com/dwr/status/1852062425773953092

d30 matters less and less when there's not user growth alongside it

Lol brother this is backwards Growth matters less and less when there's no retention preceding it Why attempt to grow something that people use once and stop using?

Maybe it is! My point is that I think you can parrallel path growth and retention opposed to being 100% focused on retention Did early social apps solve for retention or network effects? Why did I come back to Facebook or Myspace in the early days? Because more and more of my friends were there to be social, not to consume content A lot of social media today is really about media and content consumption rather than a social network for me to talk to my friends or connect with a social circle

Early days it was also a way more novel thing, social sites are a dime a dozen now

For Farcaster, every user that makes an account for whatever reason (degen, cool app, twitter alternative) can be retargeted and is more likely to turn into an active d30 user with some new feature, community, xyz. It’s unrealistic to think users will come, ditch other social media apps & stay active on Farcaster from now on. Same happened with most users on Twitter & co. it’s normal to drop off initially, to log in only once every couple of months.. It’s not normal to stop onboarding, retargeting, working on product or retention. I follow @garrett and think there’s just way too few people coming through the front door. With more people coming through the front door, checking stickiness, asking (tracking) them for feedback, we’ll definitely improve the xp here. Even if many log off after a week, they’ll make connections or even contribute to the conversation for a week (if Farcaster lets them join channels 🫠) AND both - they & other Farcaster - users benefit short- & long-term.

> It’s unrealistic to think users will come, ditch other social media apps & stay active on Farcaster from now on. Fwiw, I never said this, nor do I believe it. But again, I'll ask: Why invite more users through the front door when the exit is wide open (ie. lack of retention)?

Isn’t the “exit wide open” always for new socmedia. - Do you think Farcaster has 0 value, 0 opportunity today? Why are you here? Don’t you think some crypto communities would benefit from moving a niche discord here? > IMO there is a solid value prop for crypto users & communities Onboarding individuals is hard because of lack of (discovering good) content, difficulty to find your way around & connect with people - not product features. - feature won’t make people stay. People stay for people/content OR entertainment/business. > I’d expect 90% of 10k new users to drop off fast, 10% give it a try, 1% new powerusers. 100 can have big impact + mans would come back.. Also, why not invite whole communities to launch channel, help them set up, settle in together? > learnings for next to join/retain Why no retention experiments with good content & discovery? Launch well-run crypto channels (crypto news, crypto chatter, trading) All in all, GROWTH EXPERIMENTS CAN/SHOULD ALL HAPPEN IN PARALLEL🙂
