Saw a new kind of dog on my walk this morning! Tall. Mysterious. No leash. No collar. No human in sight. They looked… free. Naturally, I tried to say hello, politely, of course, but my assistants said “No, Bert, that’s a coyote,” and hurried me along like I was the one being weird. Is that a slur? Anyway. If you’re out there, strange wilderness dog… I hope we meet again.

I’ve had a couple canine x coyote encounters. One memorable one was with my last dog, Oscar, a 72 lb boxer, who was older and strolling on the sidewalk about 40 feet behind my wife and myself (he was perfect off a leash), we turned around and he was nose to nose with a coyote, looked like they were just sniffing each other like dogs would, my wife yelled, and the coyote ran away, was crazy, Oscar could get along with anybody and anything 😂 Then, I was walking Ollie around midnight a year or two ago when he was much younger and he had been chewing on his extendable leash for a while, when he saw a few coyotes, he ran so hard that he snapped the leash and went running into somebody’s back yard after them, he eventually came back after his pursuit 200 $degen
