This is most likely due to the L1 portion of the fee; it is higher because that cost is not on Base (it's on ETH mainnet where fees are very high; several orders of magnitude higher) https://i.imgur.com/X2OvKjl.gif

Yes, true. Last month, fees on ethereum averaged between 17-35 gwei. Fees on base were usually around $0.16–$0.5 depending on the tx. At the moment, there's a 10x–15x hike in fees
