Astronomers have identified a greater diversity in the explosions of white dwarf stars than previously known, which is crucial for understanding dark energy. By analyzing 3,628 supernovae observed by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) between March 2018 and December 2020, researchers found that these stellar explosions vary significantly in brightness and duration. Some are so faint they are barely visible, while others are bright enough to be observed for months or even years. This discovery enhances our comprehension of type Ia supernovae, which are vital for measuring cosmic distances and investigating the universe's accelerating expansion.
